According to Wikipedia, a “sin eater” is a person who, through the ritual consumption of food and drink, takes upon themselves the sins of another person, often someone on their deathbed, thereby freeing that person’s soul from those sins and allowing them to pass away in peace.

It is believed that the ritual of sin-eating was practiced in some regions of Great Britain and survived there until the early 20th century. The 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, under the entry “sin eaters,” provides examples of similar customs in other parts of Europe.

A sin eater led the life of a socially excluded person. This individual was brought to the bedside of a dying person, and a relative would place a piece of bread on the dying person’s chest and pass it, along with a bottle of beer, over the body to the sin eater. After a prayer or recitation, the sin eater would drink the beer and eat the bread. In this way, the sins were transferred to the one performing the ritual.

According to local legend, Richard Munslow, whose grave is located in Shropshire, England, was the last English sin eater. He died in 1906.
