Jesus’ Clairvoyance, Clairvoyance in Christianity

The New Testament states that Jesus spoke with God. We may therefore infer that perhaps He also saw Him, just as Moses, Abraham and other prophets of the Old Testament did. Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Anne, the grandmother of Jesus, saw angels, who do not naturally occur in the physical world. His family, when they came to the tomb, again saw angels. These are therefore further examples of clairvoyance within a religious context.

The statement that only Jesus spoke with God is somewhat overstated. The Gospels do not mention many instances in which Jesus converses with God. They emphasize that He speaks to Him, but the replies He may or may not have received are generally not recorded. The potential conversations with God occur mainly while Jesus was dying on the cross and when He raised Lazarus. Strictly speaking, what happened on the cross was not a conversation but rather an appeal: “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” These words, however, are themselves a quotation from the Psalm of David.

In the Gospels, God appears directly only during the baptism in which, according to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus participated. According to John, Jesus was not baptized. The words spoken were: “This is My beloved Son…” This is an example of clairaudience rather than clairvoyance, because it concerns the human faculty of hearing rather than seeing.

The Old Testament, by contrast, mentions an entire succession of prophets, kings and other figures who engaged not only in monologues but also in dialogues with God.

– Abraham bargains with God.
– Ezekiel, Jeremiah and Zechariah continually converse with God.
– Moses even left accounts describing how he went to speak with God and how he refused when God instructed him to speak to the people. Aaron was later appointed to fulfill that role. The Bible contains entire chapters beginning with the words: “The word of the Lord came to me, saying…”, in which God speaks extensively.
– While still in the wilderness, the tribes of Israel experienced collective prophecy, during which all the adult men spoke with God whenever they wished.

Throughout history, and even in modern times, many people have described visions involving conversations with the invisible Jesus or with His invisible Mother. These, too, are examples of clairvoyance.

– Numerous individuals mentioned in the Old Testament perceive immaterial angels through clairvoyance.

The list of Christian mystics and clairvoyants, especially women, is very long.

– In the Roman Catholic Church, the Polish Father Klimuszko and Padre Pio were well-known and respected clairvoyants.
– For many years, the Coptic Church of Egypt was led by a clairvoyant healing archbishop.
– The charismatic healing priest John Bashobora also visited Poland. Link

Within the Catholic Church there have been, both historically and in modern times, many reported examples of Marian clairvoyance.

– The Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the Aztec visionary Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on Tepeyac Hill, now within the boundaries of Mexico City. Link

– Medjugorje is known primarily because of the reported apparitions of Our Lady of Medjugorje, which are said to have begun in 1981. They continue to be examined by the Catholic Church and have neither been officially approved nor rejected. According to the six visionaries, the Virgin Mary first appeared to them on June 24, 1981, at a place called Podbrdo, at the foot of Crnica Hill. They state that she continues to appear to them to this day. Three of them (Ivan, Vicka and Marija) report almost daily apparitions for more than thirty-four years, while the remaining three (Mirjana, Ivanka and Jakov) report apparitions at varying intervals, either once a year or once a month.

– According to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, on February 11, 1858, at Lourdes, near the grotto of Massabielle, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous, identifying herself in the local dialect with the words: “Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou” — “I am the Immaculate Conception.”

– In 1917, three shepherd children from Fatima—Francisco and Jacinta Marto and Lucia dos Santos—announced that the Virgin Mary had appeared to them and entrusted them with the three Fatima secrets. The Catholic Church later declared these apparitions to be consistent with Catholic doctrine and officially recognized them in 1930.

– Saint Teresa of Ávila experienced continuous visions of Jesus Christ for more than two years. In another vision, a Seraph repeatedly pierced her heart with the glowing tip of a golden lance, producing an indescribable spiritual and physical pain. This vision resembles that of Saint Francis of Assisi, described in the hymn The Struggle of Love.

Teresa of Ávila described the experience in these words:

“I saw in his hand a long golden spear, and at its iron tip there appeared to be a point of fire. It seemed to me that he thrust it into my heart several times and pierced my very entrails. As he withdrew it, it seemed that he drew them out also, leaving me completely inflamed with a great love of God. The pain was so intense that it made me moan, yet the sweetness caused by this overwhelming pain was so surpassing that I never wished to be rid of it…” Link

– Recently, ten thousand pilgrims gathered at the shrine in Knock, in northwestern Ireland, expecting an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The gathering was organized by a self-proclaimed clairvoyant. Link According to reports, many people claimed to see the Virgin Mary, not so much through clairvoyance as in cloud formations.
